NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK - Zambesi

Always a favourite and guaranteed to be standing room only, it just wouldn't be Fashion Week without Zambesi!

Founded in 1979, Zambesi is seen as one of New Zealand's most successful fashion brands, described by designer Elizabeth Finlay as "Clothes to evoke emotion and intrigue"

The show started in dramatic fashion, with side glimpses of the models flashing past the entrance to the runway as the audience sat in darkness awaiting in anticipation for the first look to enter the arena.

Normally a predominantly dark collection, this year Zambesi featured pops of bright colour throughout, mostly through an array of textures and patterns laid over one another. It wasn't entirely new territory for this iconic design house though, with pieces in a dark palate draped over some of the brighter garments ensuring a classic Zambesi feel to the collection.

The entrance of the menswear collection to a Smashing Pumpkins soundtrack certainly set the scene for the feeling of Zambesi Man AW13. This was the Zambesi we've come to know and love, with classic lines and tailoring contributing to a sleek, preppy look but with a distinct edge - something only Zambesi could pull off.

Winter coats with contrasting sleeves and panels were a highlight, and the experimentation with patterns continued, with a number of pieces in black and yellow check, and stripe prints being paired together.

The reaction after the show seemed mixed, but we were definitely fans! This was Zambesi after all, and what kind of Zambesi show would it be without a bit of drama or an unexpected twist?  In our opinion, at 33 years young this giant of the New Zealand fashion industry is still at the top of the class.
