NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK - Deryn Schmidt

Last year we saw Deryn Schmidt's New Zealand Fashion Week debut as one of the New Generation designers, where her AW12 collection Joy of Life stole the show and received widespread critical acclaim (including from us!!)

Known for her beautiful tailoring and exquisite finishing of garments, when they said this talented Wellington designer was one to watch, they were right! This year Deryn Schmidt returns to New Zealand Fashion Week showing her AW13 collection The Wall.

The Deryn Schmidt brand has always been a favourite of ours, and as such we've always given Deryn the positive press that (in our opinion) she deserves. All we can say is keep the accolades coming, because in her debut solo show at NZFW, Deryn Schmidt has once again proven herself as one of our finest home-grown fashion talents.

This was the first show we've seen which featured models of different ages, reflecting the wide appeal of the Deryn Schmidt brand. In a refreshing change for fashion week, we were lucky enough to see models of an older age group looking absolutely beautiful on the runway.

When it comes to inspiration for The Wall, there are a few aspects at play. While there is a specific wall that Deryn refers to, it is also a metaphor for life - we all 'hit the wall' at some point! With both these concepts in mind, the garments in this collection are designed to give strength, and provide the support and confidence necessary to remain positive whatever the situation.

Constructed from the finest natural fibres - wool, silk, merino, cotton - the aspects which inspired the collection are clear - architectural influences with clean, crisp lines and strong geometric prints which feature in several pieces.

Strength wasn't the only feeling we got from this collection, however. When it comes to hitting the wall, we know it's important to take time out to relax and restore balance. This is a collection which balances the needs of the Deryn Schmidt woman, with some soft, flowing feminine pieces creating a relaxed vibe - the perfect compliment to a busy modern life.

If you're in Wellington (and brave enough) take a drive over the Haywards Hill road - you might just come across a certain inspirational wall.
