Chalkydigits, giving us the bird
OK, so you all know we love brands that commit to the environment. Well done Chalkydigits! They've been working hard to help preserve biodiversity within our native birds species on Chalky Island, Fiordland. And as a result, the Christchurch label has scored a nomination for a prestigious Department of Conservation (DoC) award. Chalkydigits has been nominated for the Southland Conservation Corporate Conservation Award and is one of six finalists from the Southland region up for the award.
In partnership with the Fiordland Conservation Trust and Doc, the Chalky Island Project was initiated to restore the South Island Robin back to the off shore pest-free sanctuary nearly 100 years after being wiped out by stoats.
Chalkydigits founder Liz Collins said the company was delighted to be recognised for its work alongside other finalists in the corporate division, including the Fiordland Lobster Company, Southern Discoveries, Peregrine Wines, Rio Tinto Alcan New Zealand Ltd and Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue.
The aim of the Chalky Island Project was to provide a safe haven for the cheeky South Island Robin that has seen declining numbers on the mainland in recent years and also to protect the biodiversity of the island sanctuary, which is also home to some of New Zealand’s most endangered birds. Chalky Island has been pest-free since 1990 and now plays host to Mohua, Tieke, Little Spotted Kiwi, Kakariki and even in the past, kakapo.
Chalkydigits designed and produced a woodcut badge of the South Island Robin from which all proceeds were channelled to the project. Earlier this year two of the chalkydigits team assisted with the capture and release of South Island robin upon Chalky Island and were thrilled to be a part of conservation history.
Good luck in the finals guys. XO M+M
