The marae at Te Papa is hardly an obvious setting for a fashion show, but for designer Tessa Bailey-Lont’s debut collection, Maui and The Sun, the location makes perfect sense.
With Kaupapa Maori as her muse, Bailey-Lont was intuitively drawn to the Maori legend Maui and the Sun. As Tamanui the sun eagerly flies through the sky without consideration to the people below, the legend reminds us to slow down and seize the day.
The story held great relevance to Tessa’s life at the time - for the artist, model, mother, design school graduate and entrepreneur, the days seemed to be passing by too quickly.
With this in mind, Bailey-Lont set to work fusing traditional Maori design and concepts with contemporary methods of fabric manufacture, ultimately creating a sexy collection of great finesse.
Interweaving her Maori ancestry with modern silhouettes, and dramatically integrating dance onto the runway, this is one fashion show not to be missed!
We'll be at the show, pics of Tessa's work to come!
